Certified seed potato production is expanding steadily in Russia's Irkutsk region as producers work to counter varietal 'degeneration,' the loss of a variety's valuable traits after roughly 7–8 years of traditional cultivation. As of April 2026, the region held 33,207 thousand base in-vitro clones grown under sterile lab conditions and 172,677 thousand micro- and mini-tubers, with 4,100 hectares planned for potato planting in 2026. Microclonal propagation is carried out by the Irkutsk branch of Rosselkhoztsentr, running since 2014, together with Irkutsk State Agrarian University named after A.A. Yezhevsky and the private farm IP Kichigin L.P., which has opened its own lab to supply its own healthy seed stock. Local farmers most often choose Prime, Gala and Alouette, while the Alaska variety is also grown on farms such as Kichigin's for trials and propagation, valued for its resistance to late blight.
