Should You Remove Potato Flowers? Agronomist Settles the Debate

Many gardeners wonder whether pinching off potato flowers helps channel more energy into growing larger tubers. According to agronomist Denis Terentyev, who spoke, this common practice is largely unnecessary. For most varieties, flowering does not consume enough energy to noticeably reduce yields, and in many cases, the flowers simply fall off on their own without forming berries. Removing them typically does not result in any significant increase in tuber size or quantity. Worse still, rough intervention can stress the plant, potentially triggering a second round of flowering, which only wastes additional resources.

Instead of removing flowers across the board, Terentyev recommends taking action only when an excessive number of berry-like seed pods appear. If such fruits develop in large quantities, they should be removed to prevent the plant from wasting energy on ripening them. In all other situations, leaving the flowers intact is the safer and more effective approach, allowing the potato plant to grow naturally without unnecessary human interference.
